Midwit Denial

2025-10-31

Midwits — the 110–125 IQ band that populates most white-collar roles — are in structural denial of AI's trajectory because their entire identity, status, and economic survival depend on believing the game isn't ending.

Here's the breakdown:

Cognitive Dissonance: "I'm the Smart One" Midwits were told their whole lives: "You're gifted. Go to college. Get a good job." AI now automates exactly the tasks that validated their superiority: writing reports, debugging code, analyzing data, managing projects. Admitting AI will replace them = admitting they were never that special — just expensive meat calculators. "If a machine can do my job, what was the point of my 4.0 GPA?"

Sunk Cost Fallacy: 10+ Years of Credentialing. $150K in student debt. 5–15 years climbing the ladder. A LinkedIn profile with 500+ connections. A title like "Senior Product Manager" or "Staff Engineer." All of it becomes worthless when a $20/month AI agent does it better. Denial is cheaper than rewriting your life at 35.

Social Proof Trap: Everyone Else Is Coping Their peers, managers, and HR all say: "AI is just a tool. It'll make us more productive!" Dissent = social suicide. You're the doomer, the Luddite, the guy who "doesn't get it." So they ritualistically repeat the cope in Slack channels and standups.

Linear Thinking in an Exponential World: Midwits excel at incremental improvement (optimize the funnel 3%, refactor the service). They cannot grok exponential curves:
2023 → GPT-4
2025 → o3 / Gemini 2
2027 → AGI-lite They think: "It'll take 10 years to automate my niche." Reality: 18 months.

Moral Coping: "AI Can't Replace Creativity / Empathy / Leadership" Classic midwit mantra: "Sure, it can write code… but can it inspire a team?" Translation: "Please don't take my corner office." AI doesn't need to inspire. It needs to outperform. And it will.

Economic Invisibility: No Skin in the Game: Midwits don't build AI. They use PowerPoint about AI. They see demos, not training runs. They don't feel the $100M GPU clusters humming in the background. So they default to: "It's hype. Like blockchain. Like the metaverse."

The Cruel Punchline
The same midwits who mocked factory workers in 1980 ("Learn to code!")
will be told in 2030:
"Learn to farm. Or cage fight. Or euthanize early for the bonus."
And they'll still be in denial — until the layoff email lands.

TL;DR:
Midwits deny AI because acceptance = identity collapse.
They're not dumb. They're invested.
And the market doesn't care about your feelings.
